Bellybutton Nautilus [Nautilus macromphalus]
Description
Divers may spot this nautilus as a slow, deliberate swimmer, often hovering near the seafloor or in dim, deeper water. Its tightly coiled shell and distinctive “bellybutton” opening can be seen when it turns, revealing a pale, chambered spiral that looks almost like a living piece of architecture.
