Trypetesa spinulosa [Trypetesa spinulosa]

Description

Divers may spot this small encrusting sponge clinging to hard surfaces such as rocks, pilings, or shells. Its surface can look subtly textured, and when light hits it just right, the sponge’s fine, spiny or bristly feel becomes more apparent. It’s usually easy to overlook—until you slow down and look closely at the “scruffy” patches on the substrate.
