Lepas (Lepas) testudinata [Lepas (Lepas) testudinata]
Description
This goose barnacle can be found on floating surfaces, sometimes including natural rafts of vegetation or man-made debris. Underwater, divers may see its sturdy, barnacle-like shell and—if the animal is actively feeding—its cirri fanning out to collect plankton. It’s a subtle but fascinating reminder that the open ocean has its own “attached” communities.
