Cryptophialus variabilis [Cryptophialus variabilis]
Description
This species forms subtle colonies that can vary in appearance from patch to patch, which is part of what makes it tricky to identify. Divers may see small, delicate growths clinging to sheltered areas of the seafloor, often blending in with the surrounding hard substrate. With a slow approach and a closer look, the colony’s fine structure becomes more apparent.
