Holthuis cleaner shrimp [Lysmata holthuisi]
Description
This cleaner shrimp is typically seen as a compact, alert shrimp with a bright, patterned look that stands out against the reef. Divers often find it near cleaning stations—small patches of substrate where fish repeatedly return to be cleaned. If you watch patiently, you may see the shrimp “invite” fish closer with subtle movements before it starts cleaning.
