Palythoa dura [Palythoa dura]
Description
Palythoa dura is known for forming firm, encrusting colonies that can occupy significant areas of reef rock. Divers frequently observe a textured surface with many small polyp openings, giving it a rugged, leathery look. With the right conditions, the polyps can show brief extension, making the colony appear more “alive” during a dive.
