Palythoa australiensis [Palythoa australiensis]
Description
This species forms encrusting colonies that can cover rock surfaces, sometimes creating broad, flattened areas that look almost like a living coating. Divers may notice the polyps’ small openings and the colony’s slightly rough texture, especially when it’s partially shaded or near current. With gentle water movement, the colony can look more “alive,” as the polyps extend and retract.
