Opisthoteuthis chathamensis [Opisthoteuthis chathamensis]

Description

Often encountered in deeper, dimly lit waters, this deep-sea octopus-like squid is a rare sight for recreational divers. Divers who do spot it may notice a slow, deliberate glide through the water column, with a body posture that looks almost “hovering” rather than actively swimming. Its muted colors and low-contrast appearance make it easy to miss until it moves.
