Balanophyllia (Balanophyllia) cellulosa [Balanophyllia (Balanophyllia) cellulosa]
Description
Divers may spot this small stony coral as a low, often encrusting or mound-like growth on rocks and hard substrates. At close range, it can look like a patchwork of tiny openings, with polyps that subtly extend to feed when conditions are right. It’s a great example of how even “quiet” reef surfaces can be alive with micro-habitats.
