Etmopterus splendidus [Etmopterus splendidus]
Description
This species is a deep-sea lanternshark, and divers in suitable environments may notice it as a compact shark with a dark body that can look almost velvety in low visibility. Under certain lighting, its bioluminescent qualities can make it seem faintly “glowing” from below, especially when viewed against the darker water column. Encounters are usually brief and best observed with a careful, non-intrusive approach.
