Mergui cup coral [Balanophyllia (Balanophyllia) merguiensis]
Description
Mergui cup coral can appear as small, rounded cups or low mounds attached to reef rock. Divers may see multiple colonies spaced out like miniature “cups” across the substrate, sometimes partially shaded by surrounding structure. With good visibility, the coral’s surface texture and distinct openings become easier to pick out.
