Balanophyllia gemma [Balanophyllia (Balanophyllia) gemma]

Balanophyllia gemma
Description

Divers often notice this species as a small, tightly attached cup- or mound-like coral on hard rock or shaded reef faces. Its surface can look subtly textured, and when conditions are right you may see a gentle “breathing” movement as polyps extend and retract.
