Trochochaeta [Trochochaeta]

Description
Trochochaeta is the sole genus within the family Trochochaetidae, comprising small, marine polychaete worms. These worms are characterized by their segmented bodies, each segment equipped with parapodia (lateral appendages) that aid in locomotion. Members of this genus inhabit benthic environments, often found in mud or sand at various ocean depths. They are distinguished by their elongated bodies, relatively few segments (usually less than 50), and the presence of distinctive, ciliated larval forms known as trochophores, which contribute to their dispersal and colonization of new habitats. The adult worms play a role in the benthic ecosystem by participating in the breakdown and recycling of organic matter.
