Epinephelus [Epinephelus]
Description
Divers often spot Epinephelus groupers tucked into rocky ledges, caves, and coral overhangs. With their heavy bodies and bold patterns, they may hover calmly and then surge forward with surprising speed when approached. Many species are territorial, so repeated dives can reveal the same individual returning to the same shelter.
