Callochitonidae [Callochitonidae]
Description
Callochitonidae is a family of chitons also within the order Lepidopleurida, distinguished by their unique plate structure and arrangement. Unlike the more common chitons, members of the Callochitonidae family have a reduced girdle - the area surrounding the plates - and their plates are often adorned with distinct sculpture patterns. These chitons are found in a variety of marine settings, mainly on rocky substrates where they feed on microscopic algae. Their distribution includes a range of geographical locations, emphasizing their adaptability to different marine environments.
